Aniimo Umbral Guide: How to Hunt the Guaranteed-Perfect Rarity
Everything the game says about hunting an Umbral Aniimo: the flat 1-in-3,000 rate, the guaranteed Perfect Potential, the two published spawn boosts, the guaranteed eggs, and the evolution trap that erases the look the moment you evolve or change form.
Umbral is the launch build's second rarity axis: any Aniimo species can carry it, at a flat 1 in 3,000 per encounter, and the game's own rule card is blunt about the payoff – Innate Potential is always Perfect. The catch is just as blunt: evolve the Aniimo or change its form and the Umbral look is gone for good, while the Perfect Potential itself stays on the creature. What you’re actually hunting
Umbral isn’t a species list. Every creature carries a flat Umbral roll (dark_rate) next to its Sparkling roll (shiny_rate), and that roll points at a Potential table whose only possible outcome is Perfect. So an Umbral Emberpup, an Umbral Nimbi and an Umbral Stellarys are all exactly the same 1 in 3,000 shot – there is no rarer or commoner species to target, only more or fewer encounters.
For scale, that is roughly seven times more common than a Sparkling (1 in 20,000). If you’re grinding Collection completion anyway, you are already running the same encounters that can roll Umbral – there’s no separate hunting loop to learn.
Where to actually hunt
An Umbral can turn up in two places:
- The open world, anywhere, at the same flat rate as everywhere else.
- Operation: Egg Heist, where the game goes further – Umbral Aniimo there are stated to be more powerful, on top of the guaranteed Perfect Potential. The mode’s own boss is an Umbral Stellarys, and Dr. Lewis sends Grade III Wayfarers to the Lost Isles specifically to “vie for mysterious Umbral Aniimo eggs.”
A radar toast (“Umbral Aniimo detected nearby”) fires the same way the Sparkling one does, and you can pin an Umbral as a tracking target once you’ve spotted one.
Raise your odds: the two published boosts
There are exactly two ways to push the rate up, and only one comes with a number:
- The Windchaser badge. Catch every basic-form species in the Breezy Plains to earn it; its title, Gale-Chasing, raises both Sparkling and Umbral spawn rates region-wide.
- +50% in the Breezy Plains, specifically: “Sparkling and Umbral Aniimo appear 50% more often in Breezy Plains.” This is the only boost figure the game states outright – treat any other multiplier you see claimed elsewhere as unsourced.
The guaranteed route: eggs
If you’d rather not gamble at all, four eggs remove the RNG entirely:
- Umbral Aniimo Egg, Large Umbral Aniimo Egg, Fragrant Umbral Aniimo Egg – each one is stated to “surely hatch” / “guaranteed to hatch” an Umbral Aniimo with Perfect potential.
- Legendary Giga-Egg – the top tier: guaranteed to hatch either an Umbral Aniimo or a Prismana-form Aniimo, and may additionally carry the Shadow Sparkling mutation (a Sparkling style, not an Umbral one – don’t confuse the two).
Random Aniimo Egg boxes can also drop a rare Umbral Aniimo Egg on their own. The full egg reference covers the rest of the hatching loop these sit inside.
The trap: don’t evolve it (yet)
This is the one rule worth memorizing before you catch anything. The game’s own text:
“Affected by concentrated Vein energy, Innate Potential is always Perfect. After evolution or transformation, the Umbral appearance disappears.”
The game asks you to confirm this every single time, on both evolution and form change:
“After evolution, the Vein energy surrounding your Aniimo will dissipate and its Umbral appearance will vanish. Confirm evolution?”
So if the whole point of your catch is showing off the Umbral coloring, do not evolve it. The Perfect Potential is permanent either way – only the look is on a one-way trip out. Practically, that means:
- Decide before you catch whether you want this specific Umbral for its look (keep it at its current stage) or purely for its guaranteed-Perfect stats (evolve freely, the grade survives).
- There is no known way to get an Umbral evolved form by evolving an Umbral of an earlier stage – the only Umbral Scorchhowl, for instance, is one caught or hatched as a Scorchhowl, not evolved into one.
How many encounters you actually need
At the flat 1 in 3,000 rate, here’s what a realistic hunt looks like without any boost:

One name, three eras
If you played the betas, you might remember this rarity under a different name – the game still carries all three names:
- Closed Beta 2: buried Darkler eggs on the Lost Isles.
- Global Closed Beta (CBT3): an Umbrabow Form, a twelve-species shadow form hatched from Mysterious Umbrabow Eggs (that beta-era roster is preserved on the Eggs page for the record).
- Launch build: Umbral, the rarity every species can roll, replacing the Umbrabow form type entirely.
